An Analysis of Play Themes and Therapy Progress of a Child with Anxiety Disorder in Play Therapy

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate play themes and the therapy progress of a 7-year-old girl with anxiety disorder in child-centered play therapy. Anxiety and Power/Control themes were observed intensively and repetitively. The themes in the initial phase comprised Relationships, Anxiety, Grief/Loss, and Dependency. The themes in the middle phase were changed gradually from Power/Control to Nurturing, Safety/Security and Protection. Self/sufficiency, Resiliency and Integration themes were mainly shown in the final phase. When the results of the progress of the play therapy was evaluated, there was significantly growth in the areas of Positive affect, Mastery play, Frustration tolerance, Keeps trying, and Responds to limits. The significances of this research lies in the fact that it can help to verify the characteristics of play themes and the dynamic therapy progress of anxiety disorder.
